until the Lunar Gala show on February 16

Lunar gala is a student-run organization at Carnegie Mellon University devoted to promoting fashion talent and innovation throughout the campus community. Each February Lunar Gala produces a fashion show that showcases students' work in fashion, dance, and modeling. In addition, the show brings together the incredible talent of Carnegie Mellon designers, programmers, artists, and technicians to create what is truly the year's most exciting campus event. Lunar Gala shines as the an example of the innovative and interdisciplinary teamwork that can only come out of Carnegie Mellon. Lunar Gala 2013 will take place on February 16.

Each fall hundreds of Carnegie Mellon students audition to model for the LG fashion show. Those who make the cut practice tirelessly until the show to perfect their walk, pose, and face. They are without a doubt the fiercest group of students on campus.

Lunar Gala's student designers are chosen based on a rigorous portfolio application and interview process. Working alone or in teams they sacrifice their time and effort to realize fully original and bespoke fashion lines for the show. These designers represent a broad array of backgrounds and majors from Architecture to Engineering and Creative Writing to Industrial Design.

Alanna Fusaro CFA 2014 Wanderlust Wanderlust means, "A desire to travel, to understand one's very existence." This line is inspired by her experience in Europe.

Alex Wolfe BCSA 2013 Valiant Alex is adrift and is drawn to the way clothing both protects and defines you. Valiant is inspired by fantasy games, physical armor, and the armor of the mind that comes with dressing up, becoming who you imagine your best self to be.

Amanda Yuan and Anna Cederquist HSS 2014 Milk & Tinder Two curious creators with a collective appreciation for cake-decorating, Cy Twombly, small figurines, the little comedies of daily life, and a very special pet bunny. Milk & Tinder explores the dynamic relationship between the fluidity and rigidity of nature.

Andreea Manolache and John Brieger BSA 2013, SCS 2014 L'Appel du Vide Andreea is a fifth year year BSA major with concentrations in architecture and math. This is her third year designing for Lunar Gala. She loves meeting and understanding new people and exploring nature. Her favorite person in the world is her twin sister, Silvia, who is with their line in spirit! John is a Junior Computer Science major, with a passion for interface creation and creative development through interaction. His favorite color is #FF9000, and he loves wooden boats, crisp air, and fresh-grown California vegetables.

Angela Thomas MCS 2016 POMP & CIRCUMSTANCE Likes when science and the arts combine, the quirky things in life, english rock, and questions about Africa. With backgrounds from both the classic and simple designs that make up Europe and the ever-changing eclectic style of Africa, she joined the two, to inspire her designs.

Antonio Ono and Samantha Chiu CFA 2015 QUARTZ Our collection focuses on the tensions between structure and gravity, light and form, and the manufactured world versus the natural world. We are using growth forms, generative patterns, and plastic molding to develop a minimal aesthetic that communicates the inseparability of natural and artificial environments.

Colleen Clifford CFA 2016 Twine Colleen started making clothes for dolls when she was about seven years old. She never put down the scissors, though the Velcro, Tacky glue, and felt changed to zippers, thread, any kind of fabric she can get her hands on. She also loves the sun, sailing, and carrots. Her collection was developed while listening to massive amounts of music, and is a combination of what she's learned in architecture school and years of loving fashion.

Ibrahim Garcia-Bengochea CFA 2013 NECROMANCED Inspired by the anthropology and cultural evolutions of the Mediterranean Middle East over the past several decades. Ibrahim enjoys contrasting Middle Eastern and Western social norms to bring light to cultural discrepancies between the two. This passion rose from being raised in many different societies around the world. His goal is to one day speak over 7 languages.

Julia Emmons and Edie Ofstedal CFA 2016 a minor in blue Julia Emmons (violin performance major), and Edie Ofstedal (cello performance) are both musicians with a strong interest in fashion and design. Julia enjoys spending time with her dog, Muffin, expensive pens, and pretending to be blond. Edie enjoys dumpster diving, finding money, and hand-woven oriental rugs. Together, they plot about future designs, traveling to India, stacks on stacks, and rolling in it.

Laura West CFA 2013 Expressions in White Likes sewing needles, power tools and kitchen utensils. Has never met a design project she didn't like, and enjoys finding new and unusual applications for everyday materials (like wedding dresses from tissue paper). Her collection aims to redefine what a wedding dress can be. By constructing the wedding dress out of a more sustainable material, paper, she aim to put more importance on the memories of the day rather than the artifacts that are left over.

Lilian Kong CFA 2013 CINE Likes handcrafted objects, analog experiences, popping/house, trying new things. Makes bags in her free time.

Maureen Griswold CFA 2013 Binary An avid lover of bold ideas, design theory and experimental electronic music - I hope to bring the newest sights and sounds of underground culture to Lunar Gala.

Morgan Stampf and Scott Harrison CFA 2014 Mobler Majoring in architecture, Morgan and Scott appreciate the tactility and detail of well-crafted design. The aesthetic quality of beautiful materials, thoughtful connections, and intriguing forms connect our architectural background with our love for shoes.

Oshie Merski CFA 2015 Fold, fold I was 8 when first introduced to origami: the waiter showed me how to fold a "bird of paradise" flower at dinner outing. I was fascinated by the strong, elegant form created by the complex sequence of folds. Currently a passionate communication design student, Lunar Gala was the perfect opportunity to grow as a designer while paying homage to a childhood love: origami.

Rachel Ciavarella CFA 2015 PROXY Rachel has always enjoyed making things, especially things that work with people, and believes that it's one thing to design something beautiful and another to design something that looks and functions beautifully. Designing clothing and other wearable items poses a challenge that combines her passions for people, functionality, and beauty. The Proxy collection also expresses Rachel's thoughts on another area of ergonomics; the evolving relationship between people and technology.

Rain Chan-Kalin CFA/HSS 2013 Oppidan Winter Rain spends her days and nights embarking on acutely experiential adventures. She can be lured with sesquipedalia, tactility, burnt orange, the remote outdoors, or anything that exercises imagination. In her spare time, she studies architecture and linguistics. Her collection explores winter clothing options, based on a variety of oppidan conditions in four contrasting cities around the world

Scott Alberstein and Nigel Alcorn CFA 2014 Punk Our collection addresses the misrepresentation of punk culture as we try to capture the real spirit of the punk movement as it has existed for the past several decades. Punks value freedom of expression, individualism, and share a rebellious spirit.

Angelique Rein, Heather Cowie, Lorena Lopez, Cristin Bongiorni, and Andrea Gershuny HSS 2015, CFA 2016, CFA 2014, CFA 2016, CFA 2016 SIROC A crew of artistic-minded, colorful, high-spirited individuals who appreciate the oddities of life (and cute things).

Chosen by audition, these student dancers choreograph and perform entirely original pieces during the show. This year's companies include soulstylz and DS company.
